Firstly the thing about using budget DVD-R for the finally product is not what happens, I use a much better quality full-face-printable disc for that, the discs i was referring to are when customers ask for the un-edited footage to be put onto disc. As i'm sure you're aware this, being filmed in HD, takes up between 90GB and 120GB depending on length and there is no presentation involved in this process as it is offered at no extra cost and is also stipulated to our customers that "Non-Printable Discs" will be used for this. This being the case, it would require around 25+ discs so i'm sure you can appreciate the actual cost isn't "20p" and they are not getting there actual "Wedding DVD" on these discs. Also the discs I was referring to are the 4x and 8x discs and i have experienced degradation on both types, even though i do burn discs which are 16x guaranteed at 8x and did burn these for customers at 4x. The referral, if you read it correctly, does say i did attempt to burn once at 12x and all appeared well but couldn't attempt the 16x as i knew i couldn't achieve it, but when it was for a customer it was always burned at 4x and i still got failures. Obviously i'm not the only one, if you'd care to look at other peoples reviews. Just simply warning other people who were thinking of using them for the same purpose. As i have said i use Verbatim as a result of this. All i can say is just check discs you have burned around 8 months ago and test them, you'll see what i'm talking about.

Unfortunately for those who have experienced problems with these disc's, all I have to say is 'get a decent burner'.

If you don't have a Pioneer or LG then forget it! Great disc's and real value for money. I have got disc's from 5 years ago and they still play perfect.

100% Burn Success!
I have used these discs for a few years with a number of writers and have NEVER had a faulty disc. I've tried other brands but always returned to Datasafe DVD-R. Top quality.

My current writer is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A.

Re the Purple Productions Review
Reading your original review, you indicate that you were burning 8x discs at 16x. I would suggest that might be the reason for the errors you have been experiencing. DVDs and CDs should always be burnt at the lowest speed possible to avoid errors.

I have been using Datasafe DVD-Rs since 2002 with a Pioneer 110D and have never had a single error with any of them. I continue to recommend them to anyone who asks.

No Problems
I've used these discs for a long while mainly in panasonic STB and occcasionally in a pioneer 111 and apart from the odd coaster never really had a problem.

I was a bit alarmed having read some of these reviews but after a random check I don't seem to have lost any data and the latest batch continue to write well.

I have seen faster 8x discs but I like these for compatibility amongst recorders and players.

you are giving your customers "DVD's of precious memories i.e. Weddings, Christenings etc" on a budget dvd-r???
I wouldn't use you again that's for sure, you should be using taiyo yudens, I'm sure you service does not come cheap, like you say many man hours but the burn to a 20p disc???

I have found little problems with these discs over the years

Avoid
These discs USED to be good & reliable. I find lately that they are hit and miss, mainly miss. Out of a tub of 50 , an unbelievable 21 were rejected as defective. What a complete waste of money. WILL NEVER USE AGAIN.

Beware
We were the first to review this product on 21 April 2006 and we have now experienced a very alarming trend in DATASAFE DVD-R 4x and 8x media we have used in the past. As we explained in the previous review we are in the Videography business and for the past 4 months have experienced customers returning there DVD's of precious memories i.e. Weddings, Christenings etc as they do not play any more. We immediately wanted to test this so we inserted it into a writer to test and it was showing “NO Disc†present. We tried it in several players and writers all with the same result "NO Disc". We can only assume that this is a flaw in the dye which appears to degrade over a period of time, a very short period of time by no means. We do, however, keep hard disc backups of all our works and have since recalled all of our works that have been put onto this type of media. We tested all of these returns/recalls and it appears that the discs that do not work at all were burned around 8 months ago and ones between the 6 and 8 month markers were tested and show a sporadic decline in quality from working ok at 6 months to being totally useless at 8 months. We have now completed the return with a more reliable media being the Verbatim DVD-R 16x Tubs of 25, who give there product a LIFETIME guarantee and a shelf life of 100 years. It really is worth considering the quality over quantity moral, it may be that these discs are half the price but when you consider either having to loose all of your works or at the very least having to rework it on new, more reliable media in 8 months time it's probably worth doing it right the first time, as you will end up paying 3x the cost for the discs and untold man hour costs for reworking in the end. Further advice to anyone who has used this media in the past is to check your backup copies prior to 6 months and see if they still work, if not.... Unlucky! Unless you have HD backup, then you just have to burn it all over again on the more reliable media. If they do work, make another copy quick on a more reliable media choice. Then it would be advisable to rework all of your works to date as it’s probable that this will eventually happen to all discs in this range.

For the benefit of SVP the drives and firmware being used at the time were:-
Pioneer 110D's FW V1.41 which was the latest available at the time and still is.

PS. This is in no way a reflection of our feelings for SVP as we believe SVP to be one of the leading suppliers of DVD media on the net with there superior customer services and value for money. We will continue to use SVP as our supplier.

Great Value!
I have been buying these disc's for some time now and have burned off hundreds of them so I felt I better write a short review.

I can honestly say I have never had any problems with this particular brand of dvd-r. I have read some comments here about the disc's deteriorating over time but I myself have not experienced this problem and I have always recommended these disc's to my friends.

All in all a great value disc.

only use for short term backup
Very poor longterm storage. The dye will deteriorate quickly in a 6 month period. Only use these for storing non essential data.

initially after burning there are high pif/pie scans, not good, and I have found the discs are unreadable in some drives & dvd players.

poor product from datasafe but excellent service & delivery as always from SVP!
