'Grade A' Factory Reburbished Stock: What is a refurbished item? In general terms, refurbished could also be referred to as remarketed, equivalent to new, or remanufactured.
The name 'refurbished' is something of a misnomer. An item being classed as 'refurbished' does not mean it's second hand or used. Typically they are products that have been returned to the manufacturer by customers, for any number of reasons (see below), and then tested at the factory to make sure they're in tip-top shape. Defective or damaged parts will be replaced. Apple, Netgear, D-Link, HP, Gateway, in fact, all of the top manufacturers refurbish items and then resell them at much cheaper prices!
Refurbished products can originate from a variety of sources, including:
Customer returns and cancelled orders – Fully-functional products that leave the manufacturers warehouse and therefore can no longer be sold as new.
Items where the box or casing was damaged in shipment which are returned to the manufacturer.
The item was returned to the manufacturer because of a slight defect. The part that was defective was replaced by the manufacturer, tested and then repackaged just like new.
Demonstration and trial equipment – Products have been provided to customers for demonstration purposes.
Factory or reseller overstocks – Items that are returned by the seller to make room for newer product lines.
Factory loaner equipment – Products that have been used for purposes such as trade shows, customer events, or solution centers and have been returned to the manufactuer.
Trade-in programs – Products customers have returned to the manufacturer in order to upgrade to new technology.
It is impossible to know the history of each item, but for whatever reason the unit gets labeled as 'factory refurbished' it is inspected and serviced by the manufacturer then tested and repackaged to meet original product specifications.
Why should I buy refurbished equipment? In short - refurbs save cash!
Why hesitate getting the best value by getting the exact same equipment, with original manufacturers warranty at a much lower price?
If you couldn't previously afford that expensive item you really want, NOW you can with a factory refurb!
- You still get the same performance and warranty - Refurbished items have a much lower defect rate
The bottom line is, all the benefits of buying a refurbished product are the same as a new one, even the warranty! So, think again, are you shopping smart?

Much better!
Many thanks Ant of Paignton! Your info was great. Have successfully upgraded the firmware to twin-record with your advice! Menu options seems more comprehensive and I havn't noted any downside in the EPG. (It was actually much easier to update than I thought it would be!)
Very much happier with this machine now! Thanks again!

Yes you can record 2 shows at the same time. Read on.
Am now on my third of these refurbished Digihomes. My original PVR80 dead on arrival from ebuyer, replaced and since then a brilliant buy. The PVR 160 I bought from SVP showed problems with sound disappearing on recording playback and regular skipping of picture. Bit of research in forums suggested upgrading the firmware to one of the unofficial versions out there on the web. To their credit SVP happy to replace, but also happy to let me upgrade the firmware and still return it if no improvement.
I have upgraded mine to a Twin Record box - yes, 2 channels at once - try and find a box with that capability at this price elsewhere!
Instructions and link to the Twin Record firmware and the 4.9 version, with grateful thanks to the guy who keeps this page here;
http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/vestel/update.htm
Do take notice of his Note in the text and don't switch of the box whilst it is disk checking. Also, you should, once firmware upgraded, turn off the automatic updates in the configuration menu as the twin record version shows as v1.0 and will get overwritten.
Good background detail from geeks on forum here;
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=750295&page=2
Firmware v5.6 (single record) which is purported more stable than the v4.9 in this Digihome here;
http://www.aouq23.dsl.pipex.com/vestel_t810_v5.6.bin
The serial cable can be bought for a quid (cheaper than Maplin by a mile !) here ;

I have successfully upgraded my old PVR80 to v5.6 and given it to my aged mother.
In conclusion. Upside.Dead cheap for entry level PVR. Easy to use. Works very well if you get a good one.
Downside. EPG takes sometime to load. (Made worse if you do upgrade to twin record.)

Great Value
Came with small marks on front plastic panel, not visible unless close up, otherwise perfect. Plus points: price, 70hrs recording time, ease of use, also lots of support data on the internet such as updated firmware, mods for adding USB connection to transfer data to/from PC, using linux to read ext2 format partition.
Negatives:- missing program data on epg, old v4.4(uk) firmware, (latest official v5.6), has hung once in 3 weeks, once had lost volume bug. Single record only (unofficial firmware dual rec available, not tried it). All firmwares probably invalidate warranty and need to be transferred using serial port; I might try that post warranty.

Not bad
Firstly, i think we need to be a little less romantic about what 'Refurbished' means. In the case of the unit I received it means 'filthy'! The main unit was covered in splashes (which I hope was coffee!) and the remote had ground in dirt between all the buttons. Additionally, the battery cover on the remote was broken and would not hold into the unit - so mine now has some hi-tech sellotape holding it on. Realistically, it definitely has that authentic car boot purchased feel!
But now some better news; despite being in a poor signal area, this unit picked up all freeview programing with a supprisingly good quality picture.
This model is old; it's program guide and firmware is also several years old and apparently no update is available - it is indeed basic. It is not able to accomodate top-up cards or any subsrciption services that require a card because it has no slot. The guide tends only to able to supply program info for 1-2 days.
The unit is very much out of date but it works and works pretty well. As the other reviewer has said, it will record one while you watch one, but not record two. While it is recording, it's functionality becomes very limited.
Biggest gripe: no facility for series link (but it will record on daily, weekly, time slots.)
Overall, a basic unit being sold pretty cheaply and does what it says on the box (and pretty well at that).
I do not regret this purchase.

Very Impressed
I have a few good points and a few bad about this unit.
On the bad side, the tv planner is often missing program info and takes a while to catchup, but this seems to be on certain muxes so could be my signal area. It has a plastic flap on the front right, but no card slot behind it, guess its a standard case. You can't record 2 shows at the same time. When recording you also can't timeshift or watch something you recorded earlier, or use PIP.
On the plus side, it does has picture in picture, a clear 8 character LED display for the channel name on the front, 75 hours recording time (it reserves 3.7gb for timeshifting) and is only £57 !
Overall this is great for 57 pounds, equalling the features of £150+ models. I'm very glad I got one.
