Ours is good, suits Linux, too
We have had a 120GB version for most of this year, no known problems. Formatted with FAT it can be accessed from Win2K/XP and Linux equally well. This is handy for backing up all our systems, as well as for transferring stuff too big for USB flash.
We just use the built-in tools in Ubuntu Linux to backup whole partitions or folders.
Highly recommended.

I have 2 of these drives and they work flawlessly everyday. They
travel with my laptop all over the place and work every time. I
have used them on OSX,Linux,XP & Vista to move files around
any they are no hassle at all.
I would definitely recommend these to anyone considering
buying a portable drive.

Great little drive
Had my 80Gb one now for nearly 2yrs. Its been faultless, and just works every time. Like most 2.5" ones, it may not be the fastest drive in the world, but then we buy 2.5" for convenience, not performance. I do not use the backup software (have my own more robust backup strategy), so cannot comment on that. Although not a 'ruggedised' drive, this one has put up with its fair share of abuse, and stood up well.
Only 2 issues I've had have been not faults of the drive:
1) My old laptop only had USB1, so used a PCMCIA USB2 card, only this couldn't provide enough power. Rang Freecom, they sent me a PSU unit FOC to overcome these situations.
2) Couldn't work out why Windows was saying not enough free space when tring to copy a 6G zip file to it - its formatted to FAT so can only do 4G files.
Overall, very pleased with it. But don't run off a PCMCIA adapter, as you will need a PSU, which bypasses the point of a 2.5" drive (and no fault of the drive)

Hard drive died after a few months !
I bought a 40GB drive for my colleague in August 2007 - within a few months of normal usage the hard drive died, and a professional data recovery firm was unable to recover any of the data. My advice : back up all your important data regularly, and not onto one of these drives !
*** SVP Note ***
Wise advice - always backup your data. This hard drive should have lasted longer under normal conditions though - most will be good for many years - and anything that fails this soon will be a warranty replacement case.

Ignore the included software - The drive is great however!
Got the 160GB version some weeks back for some backup and OS testing - and has worked faultlessly with Mac OS X.
Just here to buy another... :)

Freecom 2.5
Poor software, poor sync system, customer support non existant- standard automated reply - then nothing.
Looks well, file transfares( when they work) are fast.
If you find a similar priced drive or cheaper intended to use simply as a portable drve, go for it

Does the job, but software is poor
I bought this for a mate hoping that the backup software would be user friendly. It isn't.
Although you start in 'wizard' mode, it still brngs up 'expert' mode at the end of a backup. This tempts/confuses you into doing the same thing again.
Also, the backups seem to duplicate everything, not replacing only newer files. This is poor and something my Maxtor drive does with ease. I'll investigate further, but I'm not hopeful.
Also, it completely failed to backup a folder which I added to this list. Grrr.
I had a couple of backups fail too, with no indication of why, just a 'backup failed' message.
Hardware wise it's fast, sylish and quiet so those bases are covered.
Overall then, the software sucks but if used as a basic portable drive then it's fine.
