Brilliant Drive.
This is the second on of these drives I've bought. I fell in love with the design immediately and when the price dropped below£100 instantly bought the 320 gig version. I've had more hard drives drop from under me than John did horses so believe me I'm very critical. The rubbery case is simply brilliant. No sharp edges and it claims to be able to survive quite a drop. This is great for travelling and fits neatly into a computer rucksack sidepocket. My advice is buy two so that you always have a backup of your backup, then if one does fail, as they all do, it isn'y the end of the world. There is no excuse with the price of these things being so low. Back up online, twice with hard drives. Have a DVD backup etc. etc. This is simply a great product at a great price. The USB cable tucks neatly into the grooved top and wow 320 Gig for under £100. SVP are very quick to answer support queries and are one of the very few companies that I trust. On top of that, it arrived on a Saturday, earlier than expected.

Freecom Toughdrive Pro Mobile 2.5" Hard Drive / 120GB
Same problems with power cusumption. Many PCs wont work if you use the supplied extension cable, without an external power supply. So not good value for money. If the built in usb was actually longer than 3-4 cm then it would be more practical. Apart from the design fault, the drive is nice and small and feels sturdy. I am going to try get a refund, and stick to my good reliable WD 40 gig drive.

250GB not recommended
Two different drives tried and neither worked on any computer using the supplied extension cable - worked fine when not using the cable. Freecom said not enough power being supplied through USB and went on about resistance of longer cables, blah, blah... I find hard to believe if the unit didn't work on an HP, IBM or Apple computer and find it unlikely they all suffer the same problem. I'll stick to LaCie units in future.

Enterprise class data storage
I'll be brief: I work for one of the biggest universities in the north. We used to use the Freecom FHD-XS drives which really weren't suitable for daily use. These drives are. We have around a dozen of these discs (120GB) that we use for moving data, backing up, and imaging computers from. We've been using them for more than a year and have never have any problems with them. Highly recommended!

Dissapointing.
This was a very handy and useful piece of kit - while it lasted. I used this to store a lot of business data that I could access when necessary which is now inaccessible. Fortunately, I have a back-up that saved me from a lot of grief. I got seven months of wear out of it before it suddenly wouldn't work any more. I sent SVP a complaining email about this claiming a replacement which they have chosen to ignore. Nice and small
I could have got a much bigger USB drive for the price (250Gb or so) but the Toughdrive is wonderful, not needing an external power block and being small enough for a jacket pocket. And 80Gb is more than enough for my photos, documents etc. The Acronis backup software that comes with it has had mixed reviews so I didn't bother installing it. I simply copy folders across from my hard drive in Windows Explorer then delete and re-copy them the next time. Easy, quite fast enough and it means all the files are there on the Toughdrive, instantly accessible on any computer.

Freecom Toughdrive Pro Mobile 2.5inch Hard Drive 80GB
First things first - I ordered the Freecom Toughdrive Pro at 1pm on the Friday for delivery on the Saturday and was most impressed when it arrived at 9am the following morning. In my opinion the few extra pounds for the next day delivery service offered by SVP is well worth it and means I don't have to take time off work during the week or arrange to collect a missed delivery from the courier. In addition, I can't ignore the price of the Toughdrive from SVP which was a lot less that any other online competitor. With regard the Toughdrive itself, it's all I hoped for and more. I already have a 300GB USB external hard drive for back-ups and additional storage, but I wanted something that was capable, portable, and robust enough to withstand any inadvertent knocks or bumps that are inevitable when you are on the move. At a size not much bigger than pad of post-it notes it's small enough to slip into a pocket and it's light enough to forget that it's there. I haven't measured the exact data transfer rates but I have no reason to doubt the figures given on the site - it's fast! The drive comes formatted for FAT but can quickly be reformatted to NTFS and the included software CD contains the Freecom programmes listed on the site and also an OEM version of Acronis True Image. If you are just looking for storage you could get a lot more for less cost, but if you are looking for portable storage with peace of mind that the drive can withstand more than a few knocks then the Toughdrive Pro is for you.
