Excellent drive
Same story as many others on here in that I only have a SATA 1 motherboard, so I was a bit wary about buying one of these. However all the reviews claiming it wouldn't be an issue convinced me to take the risk and I bought the 320gig model. It worked absolutely perfectly, no problems at all.

Great stuff
Got the 160gig, quietest drive I've used, just attatched it to my SATA I motherboard and it was up and running, well recommended!

Top Drive
Top drive, very quiet and works a charm

I dont understand why they've written that you have to use the hitachi software to make it backwards compatible, its all nonsense as my motherboard only supports SATA1 and this worked straight up

Seems good...but
I read the review by Tony Dyson, could some one tell me what soft i need to make this drive quiet... drive runs well, but is by far the loudest device in the house if anything go's onto it...really clicky and chunks away every time one bit of data gets downloaded...nasty...but it's a great drive and a good price!

8/10 should be a 10/10 if wasn't for noise!

Great drives
I wont be buying anything else for as long as these are around, quiet, fast and well built. HOWEVER***** as has been noted, they will NOT operate on SATA-I motherboards without first being attached to a SATA-II board and set to SATA-I with the utility.

Great drive
Bought this to replace an old dying 250 gb maxtor. Had intial problems setting the drive up turns out ftool and drive health will not run on my nforce 4 an8 mobo. So I was stuck with the drive in sata 2 mode while my other second drive was in sata 1. Anyway the drive is good enough that ive chucked away my old 120 gb sata 1 and ordered another 400gb hitachi now both drives will run at sata II 3.0gb mode Awesome!

Warning.. might already be 3gb enabled!
I bought the 500gig model and really happy with this drive.. except that after making a boot floppy disk to run the HDD utility i was surprised to find it already enabled for 3gb transfer which (imho) is a bit naughty considering these drives could be bought by customers who don't yet have a compatible motherboard. Luckily i was ok but i thought they were supposed to be 1.5g enabled as default. Apart from that i find this drive fast and amazingly affordable. Well done SVP, you've done it again! :)

Best drives ever
I bought two of these (250GB) and put them in a RAID 0 config after using the Hitachi software to set them to SATA II. These are the quietest drives I have ever owned, barely audible even when really busy. If you were unlucky enough to get a particularly noisy one this can easily be changed with the free software. I have run a few tests using HD Tach and the results are really good, faster than a SCSI drive with a burst speed of 352 MB/s and an average read speed of 112 MB/s!!. If you look at the comparison chart the only drives that beat this are the WD Raptors 74GB at 126 MB/s. But I only paid £28 each for these with Google checkout I will leave you to draw your own conclusions!! I also have two of these (160 GB X 2 in RAID 0) in my wifes computer, they are slightly noisier but not enough to warrant slowing down the seek times with the software. I cannot recommend these drives enough and remember IBM/(Hitachi)invented the hard disk drive over 50 years ago so they obiously know a thing or two about HD design!

ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe Mobo Works fine with SATA I
Apparently my motherboard should have had problems with this too, like someone else said here. I was stupid in that I just saw these drives after already buying the IDE PATA version and so I bought a 320Gb SATA one too. Only after I had installed it (Basically by opening the case, plugging it in and switching the box back on! you know, the usual...nothing difficult or any fancy tricks!) then I noticed something about SATA II versus SATA I on a website. After reading a lot more I realised that my motherboard most definitely did not support the newer SATA II. It even says so in the motherboard book.
Well the book is wrong is all I can say!
I downloaded the Hitachi software the other day anyway and then, when I looked at the UDMA settings, my drive is installed and running optimally. There really is no need for me to start messing around with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it right?
Just thought I'd let people know so if there are any of you out there, like me, still thrashing the power out of an old P4 Prescott with a SATA I motherboard..then if it is an ASUS then you might well be fine with it.
If it's a P4P800-E Deluxe then I guarantee it!
Thanks again to SVP.

A good drive for a very good price.
I thought I might have the same problems as others because the board where I was planning to use them for only has SATA I, but it was not a problem at all. I just plugged them in and used Acronis DD to chop each one into 100 GB chunks/partitions (320 GB drives) rebooted and everything was good. But I did set the BIOS and controllers to look and expect the drives before I put them in.

They work without me being able to hear them, and are almost as fast as my Raptors (and at a much better price) but they are slower.

A good drive for a very good price and with half a mile of bubble wrap per drive... the normal SVP quality packing :) Thanks again SVP.
