Not great hardware for the money
A friend of mine bought one of these Dell Vostro 1000 notebooks during a Dell promotion a few months back (actually it was from a Dell reseller and I was about £230 including VAT and delivery).
The overall build quality isn't bad, it's solid enough for basic home use but it really is SLOW, I mean like wading through treacle slow.
The screen is pretty good and the hard drive is ample enough for the basics and the battery lasts around 1 to 2 hours but you'd really need to invest in more memory (at least 2GB) to get any real decent speed out of the system.
It's a real shame really. If it had a Turion Processor and a bit more memory it would probably run much better.
Even worse you can't use the 'downgrade' rights on Vista Home Basic to downgrade to XP Home so you're pretty much stuck with Vista unless you buy a new XP Home license.
