usb port and card reader slot are definately work
for review below. once memory card or usb flash drive is connected, you need to press the (GO TO) button on the remote control. a small window will pop out, then u select whether gonna play your file from DVD, USB or memory card. it WORKS!!!
for anyone wants to use HDMI cable, u have to connect the scart lead 1st and change the video setting to HD.
this player is brilliant, but instruction manual is not very helpful
still deserve 10/10

Good dvd player, poor extras
Initially thought picture quality was very disappointing, but played around with settings and am now very happy. So far DVD plays all regions and divx files I've tried. Picture on 32" LCD is very sharp.
Tried to view holiday jpegs from CD. Picture quality terrible. Not really useable. Should I be trying different settings?
Can't get it to read any of my USB memory sticks or SD cards. USB stick light flashes but nothing happens. Nothing in instruction manual to guide me.

premium edition??
the first one that came didnt recognise any discs. but as always SVP sorted that problem out with a minimum of fuss.
Now on to the dvd player i came to this from having the previous Phoenix model
I cant comment on the HD upscaling ability.
I chose this dvd player due to the previous models adaptabilty of playing anything i put in it.
This premium model seems to recognise a lot less mp3 files from dvd and just gives me a disc full of empty folders. Which is very annoying means as i use it as my main source of audio playback.
Divx playback seems fine, although some files seem to give me a blank screen and a very rapid time count on the display, subs work all good,
Over all an ok player for the price, although i woulnd't call it "premium", seems more of a step down from the previous incarnation.

SVP Excellent - DVD Player Very Good
The thing about a lot of companies is that you can't tell how good their customer services are until you need them. SVP proved to be excellent, the first player I received had a problem (would not load disks) and SVP arranged for delivery of another unit and pick-up of the original at my convenience. Great stuff!
The reviews here proved to be an invaluable source of information regarding the minor foibles of this player. The build quality is adequate; certainly acceptable for a £30 player. I wouldn't trust it in the company of a small child, but non-ham fisted adults will have no problem. The size is great, it takes up no space at all. The issues with the remote are well documented, it just needs a bit of patience when using it. I would not say the build quality of the remote is a problem, it's more the design of the buttons, they are quite tall and prone to sticking on their travel.
Previous reviews give different opinions of picture quality. Okay, a picture consists of two main factors, source (such as DVD player) and display. This player gives a great DVD picture with the 32" Philips LCD I have in the conservatory. Certainly better than the Matrix player it is replacing, and is only slightly worse than my PS3 (which I think is an excellent DVD player, but is now attached to my 55" Sony in the lounge). These things are relative, and some modern day, mainstream manufacturer DVD players may be better and the differences may become apparent on larger, higher quality displays (yes, I will get round to trying it on my large Sony at some point).
It is early days yet, it may need some tweaking, but Jpegs look very soft. I won't be using this player to display photos. I assume I am doing something wrong, I can't see how everything else can be so sharp and photos so soft!
I am VERY impressed with the ability to play AVIs through USB memory sticks. It upscales highly compressed material very well (and you can see the difference by cycling round the HDMI output resolutions). The only problem is that the port seems sensitive to differences between different USB sticks. An 8GB Sumvision (yes, same as the DVD player) could not be recognised (it wouldn't even light up the power led on the stick), but a 2GB stick (can't remember the brand) was easily recognised.
Region 1 disks play without a problem, no "hacking" required. All in all, I think this is a very good buy; if you have the patience to work round the (very minor) foibles, then it's a great buy.

Excellent
Had been thinking of buying one of these for a while so i could build up my collection of Seasons of t.v shows without having to use 6 dvds per season. What a great little player, remote as said ain't the best but it is adequate just look while you press and you will see if a button needs a tiny twiddle. really not that much of an issue though. Plays back xvid great don't really get any divx so can't comment on those, looks a lot nicer in person than it does in the pictures, nice compact player, and thanks to Kathy for price matching with Aria's Super Special offer, enabling me to buy 2 of these at lowest price anywhere. Excellent Value for Money and Highly recomend to anyone.

Great player, great price - Crap remote
I bought this model mainly because my old sumvision player was having age problems, but what a nice surprise it is. Its small, the build quality is good for the price & it works very well. My only disappointment is the remote, which as other reviewers have mentioned is flimsy to say the least. The buttons stick frequently, which does make veiwing a bit awkward. That said, the quality of the pictures when using an HDMI cable can't be faulted, they're bright & crisp & the colour's true. All in all, I would recommend this player to anyone on a limited budget, who wants the benefits of HDMI without paying a fortune.

Bad start, but seems pretty good.
First one didn't work - refused to recognise ANY discs! SVP sorted a quick replacement though.
Build quality is OK, although the player does not 'sit' flat, and I have had to put blu-tack under one of the feet. Remote is awful. At one point the player kept switching off, and I realised that the power button on the remote had got stuck!
I bought this for Divx playback and USB compatibility, so I cannot comment on it's HD capabilities. It seems to play all the AVI and MPG files I have given it so far, with good quality. It is very slow at loading in full movies, even from flash memory. However, playback is very stable, even when pausing or ffd/rev, which is more than I can say for other divx players I have had. One series of AVIs I have plays without sound, but play fine on a PC. Otherwise, I have no playback issues so far - even the sound is in sync!
Subtitles DO work, despite what is said elsewhere. The player asks you to choose an .srt file if one is there. You then have to select the subtitles using the subtitle button, as if you were watching a DVD.
I have been using a 4GB flash drive, which it has accessed with no issues. I was considering getting an external HDD as others have BUT there is one big problem - indeed the biggest negative I have about this player. The menu system only shows the first dozen or so characters of a filename. This is OK for films, but the main thing I watch it AVIs of TV series, and it is impossible to see which episode you are selecting (the files do not always appear in alphabetical order either).
DVD-wise, the quality is good, and the player will show some DVDs which my fussier (and nearly 10 year old) £300 Pioneer doesn't read.
Overall, I am happy with this, but not 100%. Of course, you get what you pay for.

Good Player
Bought this as the earlier Phoenix model had been a good machine.
Tolerance of media type & AVI file bitrates seems improved on this model.
I have found that it will happily output DTS sound (critical for me, so why don't Sumvision advertise or even mention the fact?)
It will play Xvid & DivX with AC3 DD sound (via digital output to external amp)
It it will play back files from an external HDD via USB. I used a SATA 160GB partitioned in 1/2 in FAT32 (as I hear it must be partitioned @

Does Exactly what it says!
I didn't buy from svp as they were out of stock but as a loyal customer i thought i would add my comment as its the exact machine i brought, i think its great, it plays everything i can think of and I've tried them all, ok so the remote is not great but for £35 what did you expect!!, i have mine wired up via the hdmi and i cant fault the picture when viewed on my plasma.
My only gripe (very small one) is that it can take a while to load up a film if it has lots of extras etc, maybe the motor is slightly slow but i can live with it.
If like me you were thinking of buying this then don't think any longer, order it now and you will not be disappointed ;-)

Poor
Picture quality looked like it was internally DOWNconverting the image to 480 lines. Scart won't output S-Video, only RGB. Have to use the S-Video socket, so don't get the benefit of the scart signalling. Build quality suspect.
