Zengo

4 minute job fitting sata HD
(Attaches directly to caddy’s motherboard)

Plays all Xvid/divX that I’ve thrown at it
It’s a very smooth quiet machine...

The only down-sides are...
cheap'n'nasty remote control
The software browser is half-hearted rubbish...
(But you’re able to view everything with a windows type browser)

Usual laughable translation into English...

All in all a great piece of kit

Could do better
First impression, looks fairly stylish.

I wasn't impressed with the plastic clips on either side of the unit, which need to be un-clipped to install the hard-drive.Think these could break very easily if the hard drive was changed too often. The stand is also plastic, quite flimsy. Also found the screws supplied to hold the hard-drive were too big (for my drive anyway). Also, note that there aren't any cables to connect to the SATA interface, there's a plastic connector attached to the board, so be careful.

The manual isn't too good, seems to be literally from Chinese into English. Again, the drive needs to be partitioned and formatted in a certain way. This can be done via the menu when the unit is connected to a TV.

Performs reasonably well as a media-player and as an external hard drive. As for recording, the first unit supplied was faulty and I couldn't get an input signal. So, I was supplied with a replacement unit, hopefully this will perform much better.

The recording feature is the main selling point, and the main reason I bought this unit is for recording VHS etc into Xvid. I expected the unit would be more robust than it actually is, for the price. It is, however, supplied all the necessary accessories.

fine for the price
needing another 500G storage and already having bought a freecom media player and fitted a drive to that from SVP, I decided to have a punt on this zengo and a 500G sata drive from SVP. Basically it does what it says on the tin. The usb2 performance is fast so backup is fine. The video playback is ok, all my divx/mp3 movies made for archos play fine, in fact the divx playback is superior to the freecom in that fast forward actually works (freecom fast forward is just 2x whatever it says on screen for faster runs - no fix in firmware likely). The recording is in xvid and ADPCM sound and works fine on my archos machines, it is 640x480 at around 1400kbps at the highest setting and quality is fine for some time shifting, sync is good etc. The only downside to video recording is that it is done in 1 hour chunks, then a new file starts. You can join files in free virtualdub for example but lose some milliseconds in the join. So fine for a bit of time shifting and tv programs, maybe not perfect for backing up movies. However when I tried to record a protected dvd I was surprised to find it recorded straight to xvid/adpcm since THERE IS NO MACROVISION OR CGMS protection recognition built in to the recording function... neat.
Not a perfect video machine with just composite etc but for the money good value. Don't expect any support from sumvision though.
