After a little use...
In my original review I forgot to say that this beeps when you open the drawer, and there doesn't seem to be any way to disable it. This might be annoying for someone doing a multi-disk presentation or something.
I've had a couple of instances of disks that wouldn't play until I opened the drawer and shut it again - it's definitely best to operate the drawer entirely via the remote control, this happened after pushing the drawer shut manually. Not changing my rating, since I still think it's great value for money,

Techwood Upscaling HDMI DVD Player
Well the blue light isn't really that bright!
This is a stunning player for the money. Added a HDMI cable from SVP as well and plugged in with a little hope.
RESULT! - great image upscaling on my HD TV and apart from the flimsy feel of the disc tray there really is nothing to criticise. The remote is a bland block - but who cares.
Great player at a great price - well done SVP.

It's plays every disk i've put in it, and some that wouldn't play before on my previous machine, the tray is very 'floppy' so becareful, use the remote to open and shut, and yes the blue light is very bright at night and stays on expect in play mode, cystal clear picture and sound and yes as said before you get what you paid for, under £20 it's worth a purchase.

Techwood Upscaling HDMI DVD Player
Not entirely convinced by this. It seems as though when playing certain DVDs the player likes to vibrate a lot. Doesn't happen on all dvds, but seems to be genuine single layer discs. This has annoyed me so much I resorted to putting bubble wrap under the legs.
Picture quality is excellent, although I can't say I notice it a lot more than previous players I've owned.
As mentioned before, the dvd tray does feel quite flimsy, and there also seems to be no power off button, apart from the one that seems to put it on standby mode, meaning if I go downstairs during the night, I get some nice blue mood lighting, haha. Maybe that's just me being dense though. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Seemed a shame not to buy it
Bought this to complement a cheap and cheerful 720p HD TV that I bought my parents before Christmas. (Who says I'm cheap?) Plugged in the mains and the HDMI cables and that was the set-up completed. Perfectly satisfactory picture on the test DVD. For the price you can't really go wrong.

Fairly painless
This arrived today and would have been the most painless AV setup I've ever done if it wasn't for the fact that I plugged the digital audio lead into the wrong socket (for various reasons I was trying to do it blind from the front) and spent nearly half an hour going through the menus trying to figure out what was wrong before I spotted my mistake.
The picture is definitely higher resolution than RGB scart (and with real pixels, not interpolated junk), and the digital sound worked perfectly once I found my mistake. It's also region-free out of the box, which is always a plus.
About the only down-side to it is that it doesn't have a digital optical output - I misread the spec on that, and had originally intended to use it via an optical port on my amp - but only digital coax. The other outputs are SCART, stereo sound, composite video, and of course HDMI. It's a very slim (top to bottom) unit which is also nice - let me put something else on top of it with enough room for air to circulate.
It looks very nicely made, about the only things I dislike are that the drawer feels a little flimsy and the remote is a soulless black rectangle with horrible tiny keys that need rather more pressure than usual. Despite that it's definitely a keeper.

Much better than expected!
OK...Let me say this first...I'm a bit of a brand snob. My own equipment is all Panasonic, Denon, Pioneer and Cambridge I wouldn't touch a Techwood branded product normally, but I needed a cheap DVD player to plug into a TV at the school in which I work, and I noticed that the TV in that studio was one of the new HD models that the local authorities had been nice enough to supply.
I bought the HDMI equipped techwood mainly for ease of connection, and I suppose some curiosity, but it's actually producing a really nice picture!
This plays everything I try it with - DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3. The operation of the player is very quiet. Image quality is excellent, although I did find the picture very, very slightly off centre. May be my eyesight!
All in all, not a bad experience at all. Very good value at this price (Can't believe they can make them this cheap)
