Zero Defex has been a brand name for CDR and DVDR media products for a few years now. The brand has recently changed hands and the new owners are keen to raise the profile of the brand and to make it one of Europe's leading names in optical media with an emphasis on value for money and professional appearance. The disc looks much more expensive than it costs!

In common with other double layer discs, these discs have a data capacity of 8.5GB which equates to 240 minutes of video in standard play mode meaning you can fit even more of your favourite memories and yet still be assured that they are secure and protected.

ADVDInfo: CMC MAG D01/CMC MAG D03
Packaging: Zero Defex branded spindle tubs of 25 discs

We always recommend that customers keep the firmware on their DVD writers up to date. This is especially true in the case of double layer media as most reported problems are due to out of date firmware. Click here for our guide to firmware upgrading.

Excellent
This is my second tub of these disks, and every one has been a success story so far. For people having problems with them ditch the Pioneer and NEC drives and get yourself a Samsung Super Writemaster, I did and I've never looked back.

Fair medium if you have a burner with firmware that recognises them
Bought two packs of these after numerous attempts to burn DL media as a last ditch attempt before going to Verbatims.

The batch I got were CMC MAG D04-00 types not CMC MAG D01-00 or CMC MAG D03-00 as stated on the SVP site at the time of writing this review. I've already had a set of dual layer media with this dye type and things didn't go so well.

In desperation I bought a couple of LiteON LH-20A1H drives. I was using a NEC 3520AH and a NEC 7170S before.

Results:

NEC 3520AH tried two firmwares 3.04 and 3.07
===========================

3.04 sees these as 2.4X speed only and writes to them OK. However after the disk is burnt no drive even the 3520 can read them.
3.07 sees these as 4X speed only, same result as the 3.04 firmware; writes fine doesn't read in any drive.

NEC 7170S tried 1.00, 1.01 and 1.02 firmwares
===========================

1.00 doesn't recognise the disks
1.01 same as 1.00
1.02 recognises them as 4X, 6X and 8X media, however fails to burn due to a 'power calibration error' in Nero, ImgBurn and GnomeBaker

LiteOn LH-20A1H firmware out of the box was LL0C
==============================

Recognises these as 2.4X and 4X. Since the media are rated at 2.4X I burnt at this speed. SUCCESS! Not only did the media burn successfully but they were also readable by the LiteON.

The NEC 3520 and 7170S however still don't read these disks so I doubt I'll be using them till NEC bother to get round to fixing the firmware. At the time of writing, 4X speed hasn't been tested yet but either way just being able to write to this media is good enough.

They do take a while to read, but I also noticed this with the DataWrite Titanium's I tried with this dye type as well. It may just be the size of the media or weird behaviour because of the firmware.

NB: Not sure if it made any difference but I used UDF+ISO as the burn type for all tests. I also tried an ISO image with the LiteON with the same results.

Appaling Disks
For Xbox 360 backups these are dire.
Using a Pioneer 111D flashed with the latest firmware, I made 5 coasters in less than 5 minutes using ImgBurn and CloneCD.
I think it would be quicker to cut out the middle man and throw them directly in the bin thereby saving myself the precious few seconds whilst the burner looks at them then spit's 'em out in disgust.

Bad Dye
Very bad choice. As been stated earlier the dye has been changed. My DVD-RW AD-7170S with the latest firmware, it doesn't recognise them at all.

Bad dye
Having used these months ago with almost 100% success I was excited to see them back in stock again after about 6 months of no stock, bad move ordering them!! No more CMC MAG D01 dye but these seem to be CMC MAG D03 and D04, really bad time with these and am having about 70% bad burns that wont play, other 30% work perfect. Really disappointed as the initial batch of these were perfect. Back to verbs I think and all my bad burns will go back to SVP.

A Quandry
have used these disc before & thought them quite good.
Ordered a couple of cake tins of them & suddenly found that I was making coasters of them. Having used them without a problem before I assumed that my burning software was at fault & proceeded to reinstall it all.
Tried again & coasters were high on the menu.
Had an unopened cake tin of same & tried them. Worked fine.
When burning two copies I used the new tin for the first copy without problem. Used the previous tin & wallop, failed write.
Swopped over the sequence, ie using dubious disc first & it failed. Other tin, no problem.
I appear to have got a dodgy batch, even though they both came from the same order.
If they're good, they're good, get a bad batch then beware !
